Dog Training Classes through Mt. Nittany Dog Training Club

Are you in need of dog training? The Mt. Nittany Dog Training Club has released their schedule for Fall 2025! They offer the following classes:

Obedience

  • Kindergarten / KPT — Designed for puppies under 4 months at the start of class. Emphasis on early learning intervention to prevent bad habits (jumping, chewing, etc.), beginning training, and socialization to other dogs, people, and unusual situations.
  • Beginners — For dogs who have not had previous training or need to review the basics. We will show you effective methods for dealing with typical dog training issues. Emphasis is on basic obedience walking on a leash, sitting/downing on command, coming when called, etc. It is never too late to train your dog!
  • Rally Novice through Advanced Workshop — For dogs that have taken a Beginning Rally.
  • Rally Excellent / Master Workshop — For dogs that have Advanced level or higher.
  • Flyball — For both beginning or started dogs. The basic understanding and skilled needed for this fast paced sport in which teams of dogs race each other from the start to the finish line, over a line of hurdles, to a box that releases a tennis ball to be caught when the dog presses the spring loaded pad, then back to the handlers while carrying the ball.

Scent Work (Beginner)

The sport of Scent Work is based on the work of professional detection dogs (such as drug dogs), employed by humans to detect a wide variety of scents and substances. In AKC Scent Work, dogs search for cotton swabs saturated with the essential oils of birch, anise, clove, and cypress. The cotton swabs are hidden out of sight in a pre-determined search area, and the dog has to find them. Teamwork is necessary: when the dog finds the scent, they have to communicate the find to the handler. This is an introductory course for beginner dogs and owners.

Agility

  • Beginning — Open to those who have completed the Agility Foundations classes or have the permissions of the instructor. This class will build on Agility Foundations classes with the progression to lowered full size obstacles, weaves, and greater off-leash control.
  • Intermediate — Designed for individuals who have completed Beginning Agility and whose dogs are comfortable with the agility equipment. Emphasis will be on simple sequencing.
  • Advanced Intermediate — Review and reinforcement of skills learned in Intermediate for both handler and dog. Sequences will be more challenging with the goal of moving to actual competition level.
  • Agility Handling — Designed for individuals who have completed Intermediate Agility or equivalent. Emphasis is on handling techniques and course strategy.
  • All You Need to Know About Entering an AKC Agility Trial — A four week course geared toward Agility rules, including how to fill out an entry form. Standard, Jumpers with Weaves, and FAST class courses will be set up for dogs and handlers to try.

Classes are located at PSU Ag Progress Days site (Route 45, Rock Spring) about 10 miles west of State College.
